Here at Van Buskirk Jewellery, we know every piece in your collection is precious to you. That’s why every service we offer is bespoke; from design to restoration, no two jobs are the same, and we thrive on the unique challenges each client brings us.
Recently, we were asked to marry the old and the new when a customer wanted to create a shaped band from her great grandmother’s wedding ring that would fit snugly by her vintage engagement ring. You can see the original wedding band in the first photo, and the subsequent images show the different stages of creating an entirely new gold ring from an existing one.
The sentimental value of the original gold made this a delicate project, since we wanted to retain the character and memories our client associated with Great Grandma’s wedding ring. First, we cut and flattened the original gold band. Then, we rolled it through a rolling mill to obtain the perfect thickness and width to complement the engagement ring. Next, we cut a section and shaped it to hug the gemstones that formed the centrepiece of the engagement ring. After that, we soldered it to the ring shank, filed it to shape, and finally polished the resultant wedding band to complete the finish. Look closely, and you’ll see the crowning touch, in which we borrowed the hallmarks from Great Grandma’s wedding ring and kept them intact and visible – an homage to the original that our client was thrilled to wear as a similar (and stylish) homage to her great grandmother.
And there we have it: something old, something new, something borrowed and… well, who wants to feel blue on their wedding day? Unless you have some spare sapphires lying around, of course.
And if you do, don’t let them – or any of your other gemstones and gold – sit locked away collecting dust: visit Van Buskirk Jewellery and let us make you beautiful, bespoke jewellery that you can enjoy wearing, and that keeps your personal history alive!
